On first sight, e-mail messages look very simple. The above slide shows how the original idea of a the MIME-compliant e-mail message was. The headers are very simular to hash, adding some meta-data to the transported content. This false idea of simplicity may be the main cause of the large number of e-mail implementations. E-mail is not simple at all!
