You are invited to attend Only Ghosts, a percussive story-telling performance of a novel by Carrie-Ann Tkacyk. Voice performers include Tkacyk, poet A. Molotkov and Charlie Kersch with percussionists Bruce Bartlett, Ragon Linde, and Prasanna Dhoj Pradhan. Over twenty percussion instruments will shake the walls of your heart.

When a stranger comes to Batuwaa village in the lowland valleys of Nepal, the mystic and the modern interweave. Voices, music, and three story lines meld into the pulse of a mysterious place, Bhoot Pool: a place the villagers of Batuwaa fear; a place the forbidden castes are free to love, a place strangers seek to understand themselves. Of course, all freedom has its cost… and only ghosts leave Bhoot Pool.

Only Ghosts is an original retelling of Tkacyk’s novel set in 1990 during the People’s Movement of Nepal. This movement was the result of many political factions, including communist, uniting to end absolute monarchy in Nepal and bring about a constitutional democracy. Following several pro-democracy protests, King Birendra, educated at Eton and Harvard, agreed to become a constitutional monarch and elections were held. Things have not turned out as hoped.

Reviewing the February performances, Willamette Week wrote Only Ghosts is "not like anything we've seen in Portland in ages."
