Once upon a time, not that long ago, working with characters on computers was relatively easy: in the by America dominated market everyone only used ascii characters. People is Western Europe ignored their umlauts and other accents, but were able to understand the things they wrote even without these decorations.

E-mail headers which only use the classic ascii characters are very simple. Well, to be more precise: e-mail headers can only contain ascii characters, and if you want to send other characters you will have to go through various nasty encodings! And that's where we are talking about here.
